Class Descriptions:
Infant & Toddler Classes (With Parent)
Tadpoles: (6 months to 18 months) helps build swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water with songs, games and colorful equipment. Parents and children participate in guided sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including: water orientation and entry, floating skills, breath control, gentle underwater submersion, opening eyes under water and front kicking.
Tadpoles II: (19 months to 36 months) is for beginning toddlers between 19 and 36 months and their parent. We teach the parent how to correctly hold their toddler to promote relaxed and comfortable movements through water. Overcoming fear of the water, gaining breath control and relaxed gliding are the main goals. Floating and climbing out to the pool are also covered.
Level 1:
Rubber Ducky: is designed specifically for children who cannot yet swim - no matter how hesitant they are in the beginning. Students learn a relaxed, effective stroke, while also: submerging their mouth, nose and eyes underwater and floating on their back and front with assistance using "backpacks" or noodles. Swimmers will learn beginning arm motions and how to enter and exit the water safely.
Little Frog: will further encourage children to swim between 1 and 3 feet on their own. Class uses fun games to help interest children in learning to swim. Swimmers will learn to float by themselves for 10 seconds, submerge themselves to the bottom of the pool (3 feet of water) and pick up an object, learn how to do freestyle, and begin to practice elementary backstroke ("chicken, airplane, soldier").
Level 2:
Starfish: is for swimmers already able to move three feet or more through the water unassisted. Basic swimming skills covered include: picking up submerged objects, swimming on front, maintaining front float position and back float position, begin rolling over from front to back, increase skills in freestyle and "1,2, 3 breathe," swimming by themselves up to 10 feet, begin treading water and water safety will be reinforced.
Seahorse: is for children who can already swim 10 feet or more by themselves. Swimmers will float for 10 seconds on front and back with no assistance, recover from front and back floating positions to standing position, tread water for 30 seconds, further elementary backstroke into competitive backstroke and prepare for bilateral side breathing.
Level 3:
Angelfish: is for children who have already mastered beginner swim skills. They will: practice face float with ears under water, face glide to a count of 10, and freestyle with kicking and bilateral breathing. They will also practice water entry, picking up objects in deeper water and pushing off the wall underwater. Other topics covered are: front glide by kicking to the wall, kicking to the wall on back, breaststroke and kicking with a kickboard about 15 yards.
Goldfish: know all major swimming skills and should have been mastered these previously. This class serves to perfect freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. We work on kicking with a kickboard, proper breathing techniques and also proper hand placement. Butterfly is also introduced here. Swimmers must be able to tread water for 1 minute in deeper water with head above the surface.
Stingray: is designed for children who are already swimming all four strokes on their own pretty well. Our goal is to increase swimming ability, endurance, and strength so they can begin to swim all strokes properly. Swimmers will practice freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
Level 4:
Shark: Students in this class must be able to swim at least 1 lap while bilateral breathing properly. Swimmers will achieve destination swimming - where they learn not to stop swimming until they reach a safe destination or until they have completed a specific number of laps set by their instructor. All stroke techniques will be practiced and swimmers will begin to focus on lap times and setting goals by developing a competitive nature.
Dolphin: increases children's swimming distance and endurance in freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke. While students work on improving these techniques, swimmers will also work on getting the most from their dives, streamlines and flip-turns. We will also begin using drills to stress stroke perfection and proper body alignment. This level is for the swimmer who wishes to be on the swim team. It encourages technique and endurance while preparing swimmers for membership on the NOMAD swim team. Swimmers will concentrate on freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, flip-turns, pull kick glides, dives and more. The goal of this class is swimming all 4 competitive strokes 100 yards (4 laps) in IM order (fly, back, breast, free). We utilize drills similar to swim team workouts to increase swimmers' competitive nature.
